Haji Ali Waste-to-Watts Centre, Mumbai

Located in Mumbai’s D Ward near the iconic Haji Ali precinct, the Waste-to-Watts Centre demonstrates how decentralised biomethanation can transform unavoidable food waste into renewable energy within one of India’s most densely populated cities.

Commissioned in partnership with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), the facility was developed by Aerocare Clean Energy to provide a sustainable alternative to transporting organic waste across the city. Instead of sending wet waste to distant disposal sites, the plant processes it close to where it is generated, reducing transport emissions while producing renewable biogas and valuable organic fertiliser.

The project has become a showcase for how decentralised waste management can improve urban cleanliness, recover renewable resources and support Mumbai’s transition towards a circular economy.

The Challenge

Before construction, the site was an unused municipal plot that had become occupied by encroachments and anti-social activities. At the same time, restaurants, commercial establishments and nearby waste generators required a practical and environmentally responsible solution for disposing of segregated food waste.

The challenge was to convert an underutilised urban space into a modern waste processing facility capable of operating within a densely populated neighbourhood while maintaining high environmental standards and demonstrating the viability of decentralised biomethanation.

The facility also needed to maximise resource recovery, minimise odours, integrate seamlessly into the surrounding community and showcase how organic waste can become a valuable renewable resource rather than a disposal problem.

The Solution

Aerocare Clean Energy transformed the site into a fully operational decentralised biomethanation plant capable of processing approximately 2 tonnes of segregated organic waste per day.

During its initial months of operation, the facility achieved an average daily intake of approximately 1,500 kg of organic waste, with peak processing days exceeding 2,200 kg. Careful segregation and preprocessing ensured only suitable organic material entered the digester, maintaining consistent operational performance.

The plant currently processes around 1,200 kg of feedstock daily, producing an average of 120 m³ of raw biogas every day, with the system designed to generate 190–200 m³/day at full capacity.

Rather than simply treating waste, the facility recovers value through every stage of the process:

  • Decentralised collection of segregated food waste
  • Mechanical segregation and contamination removal
  • Anaerobic digestion to generate renewable biogas
  • Dewatering of digestate for conversion into nutrient-rich manure
  • Renewable electricity generation for captive consumption
  • Continuous monitoring through real-time operational reporting and preventive maintenance

The project also included the complete rehabilitation and beautification of the surrounding site, creating a clean, secure and environmentally positive public space while serving nearly 20 local restaurants and commercial establishments.

The Haji Ali Waste-to-Watts Centre has demonstrated how decentralised waste infrastructure can deliver measurable environmental and operational benefits within a complex urban environment.

The project has:

  • Transformed a neglected municipal site into a renewable energy facility
  • Diverted significant quantities of organic waste away from landfill
  • Generated renewable biogas capable of replacing conventional fossil fuels
  • Produced organic manure through anaerobic digestion
  • Reduced transportation requirements by processing waste close to where it is generated

The project also highlighted significant future opportunities. While renewable electricity generation exceeded the site’s captive consumption requirements, Aerocare proposed innovative solutions including public EV charging infrastructure powered by renewable biogas energy, allowing surplus electricity to be utilised for community benefit.

Future expansion plans also included:

  • Increasing waste collection from additional bulk waste generators
  • Expanding public awareness and community engagement
  • Installing dedicated collection systems for segregated food waste
  • Strengthening site security and operational monitoring
  • Supporting surrounding establishments in achieving Zero Waste certification through decentralised organic waste processing
